GALEN/GALEN-IN-USE
Hierarchic coding and classifications that are described in terms of their structure instead of what functions they can provide are often considered inadequate. The GALEN Terminology Server (TeS) is described in terms of the services and functions it offers to user applications. This way the applications will be able to access the complex conceptual information stored in the TeS and manipulate it without knowing the details of this information. Since the TeS also contains linguistic and coding structures, the application interface will be able to provide a uniform view of this information on a high level. Within the project a compositional system for modelling medical terminology, the GALEN Representation and Integration Language (GRAIL) Kernel, is developed together with a common reference model (CORE) aimed at representing concepts in different medical domains. ???????, which is the continuation of the GALEN project, is trying to show how the GALEN approach can be used over a multi-centre platform. The involved centres use a less complicated syntax to represent the meaning of their classification schemes, and a coordinating centre compiles it all into GRAIL, which then is integrated into the common reference model. The Division has been involved from the start. In addition to contributing to the content of the common reference model, we have also had an evaluative role, investigating how GALEN techniques can be utilized with respect to other projects. Furthermore, we have built a client to the Terminology Server (TeS). It is called KOMANTIS and is designed for building Medical Logic Modules (MLMs) based on terminology provided by the terminology server.
